Aggie lacrosse club loses thriller to Boise State

The USU men’s lacrosse club lost a close game Friday to Boise State University, 16-14.

The game stayed intense, as both teams have improved steadily throughout the season. USU midfielder Albe Garner credited the improvement of play to the organized offense.

“On Monday we instilled an offensive set-up to free up the attackmen and midfielders,” he said.

The team also had help from the weather. It started raining midway through the first half, and the team took advantage of the slippery conditions.

Tyler Berkey, a USU midfielder, took this to heart when the Broncos defensemen went for the ball, losing his stick. Berkey took the shot and scored.

“It caught me off guard,” he said. “I don’t know, it just ended up as a free ticket to score.”

The scoring seemed to go back and forth with the Broncos responding to every Aggie goal.

Goalkeeper Warner Behrman said the lack of team defense led to the high score.

“We would come down and score and then were unable to get back defensively,” Behrman said. “Both teams were able to score, we just didn’t score enough.”

The game stayed close until the Aggies turned it up in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. Jason Lambert, Paul Larkin and Berkey were all able to beat the Bronco defense and get open looks at the goal.

“We were just clicking offensively,” Larkin said. “Everyone was catching their passes, and we cleared out the area around the goal to get some good looks.”

The game remained close until the final minutes of the game, when the Broncos pulled ahead by two goals and ended the Aggies’ run.

“In lacrosse, two points isn’t very much. The score could have gone either way,” said USU midfielder Jon Atwood.

The team will seek revenge next week when it meets the Broncos again in Boise, Idaho.
