Alaskan sociology student wants to be his dog for a day
Utah Statesman: What are you doing?
Mike Coburm: I’m reading stuff for my environmental seminar class.
US: What’s your major?
Coburm: I’m a doctoral student in sociology.
US: Did you get your master’s from here?
Coburm: No, from the University of Wyoming.
US: Where are you from?
Coburm: Um, I’m originally from Eagle River, Alaska but I lived in Laramie, Wyoming for a while.
US: Why did you come to USU?
Coburm: I liked several schools and just when I came down here to visit and they showed me around the campus offered me some pretty good money so I decided to come. The program seemed really nice.
US: What do you like the most about USU?
Coburm: Probably just the environment, probably just the surrounding environment and all the outdoor activities.
US: What do you dislike about USU?
Coburm: Uh, well there’s no bars around here.
US: If you could have dinner with any three people in the world, who would it be?
Coburm: My girlfriend, and my two best friends. One of my friends is in New Jersey, the other one is in Alaska and my girlfriend is in Detroit.
US: What was your first job?
Coburm: I was a referee for indoor soccer.
US: If you have a personal motto about life, what is it?
Coburn: Don’t let the bastards get ya down.
US: Top three movies you can watch over and over again?
Coburm: Team America World Police, umm another one I like. The Singles. It’s an older one, 1991. Hmm, come back to that one.
US: Describe yourself in three words.
Coburm: Atheist, anarchist, happy.
US: If you could be anyone for a day who would it be? Why?
Coburm: Maybe I would be my dog to find out what he’s really thinking.
US: What have you always wanted to do but haven’t?
Coburm: I would say travel the Patagonia. Someplace I haven’t been to yet. Do some climbing.
US: What were you teased about when you were younger?
Coburm: Having big lips.
US: If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Coburm: Even if I liked it I would probably get sick of it after awhile. It would probably be some kind of fruit or vegetable though so at least I’d feel somewhat healthy.
US: Where’s your favorite place to relax?
Coburn: Any kind of hot springs after being out in the woods for a while, having some beers, just soaking.
US: Who is the most famous person you’ve met?
Coburm: I think John Elway, I don’t know.
US: Worst experience on a blind date?
Coburm: Yeah, she was a convicted felon.
US: Who lined you up?
Coburm: I forget, just a friend of mine from the university. It wasn’t anything, well actually it was, it was like faking a homicide. She was a nice enough person but just spent some time in prison. She just mentioned it out of the blue.
