Letter to the Editor: Miller, Ledger and Falk are all right

Editor,

In response to Aaron Falk’s article on the controversy surrounding Larry H Miller’s decision to pull “Brokeback Mountain,” a story of two gay cowboys from the screen, increased my understanding of both sides of the story. Both sides are wrong, as Falk said, but both are also right. For example, because of ownership, Miller has a right to cancel movies in his own theatres that he does not want to show (yet was somewhat inconsiderate in pulling the movie in such a close time to its first showing). However, Heath Ledger has a strong point in saying that it is an “immature move” for our society to hastily pull a movie based solely on a different idea or one person’s views. Homosexuals of Salt Lake County and other places are citizens of our hometowns. While coming in contact with these types of people everyday, shouldn’t we, as a community, be striving to bridge gaps and intolerances? Shouldn’t we also try to be more understanding? As Falk reported of the long line of moviegoers outside the Tower and Broadway Theatres in Salt Lake City, hopefully they will bring more understanding and tolerance to these types of minorities in Salt Lake City. Thank you Aaron Falk, for creating more awareness towards this issue.
