Student likes Italian food and wants to fly

Holly Mitchell

Utah Statesman: Why did you come to USU?

Candice Whiteley: When I was in high school, there was a leadership extravaganza. When we came up, I fell in love with the area and the campus. The people at the extravaganza were incredible. I didn’t even try other colleges because I knew this was where I was going to be.

US: What do you like about USU?

Whiteley: All the potential that is offered to each student.

US: What don’t you like about it?

Whiteley: There’s nothing that I don’t like about it.

US: If you had a whole day and money wasn’t an issue, what would you do?

Whiteley: Travel around the world. Starting in Greece, then Italy then Europe. If time still permitted, I’d go to Africa.

US: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Whiteley: There’s various things that I want to do and be, but it changes every day. I’m looking into being an advocate for international adoption.

US: Are you a True Aggie?

Whiteley: I’m not. I had the chance to. My freshman year we all went, but I chickened out. That’s one of my goals before I graduate, and it will be accomplished even if it’s a stranger.

US: What kind of sheets do you have on your bed?

Whiteley: Maroon. I want to say they’re cotton slash flannel.

US: Do you like working at the computer lab?

Whiteley: I love it because you are able to learn more about the technology and to be amongst the students.

US: What was your most embarrassing moment?

Whiteley: I ran into a pole once. I was talking to my friends and walking backwards, but they didn’t let me know there was a pole behind me. I turned around and there it was. I just hit it. It was in front of everyone on campus.

US: Have you ever been on a blind date? How was it?

Whiteley: It was interesting. It was in high school. We walked everywhere, and we hung out with his family and played games with his siblings. He said, “OK I’ll talk to you later” at his door. Then my friend walked home with me. It was weird.

US: If you could choose anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Whiteley: Fiji because it’s exotic.

US: What is your favorite childhood memory?

Whiteley: Riding on my horse with my family.

US: If you could meet anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

Whiteley: There’s so many people, it would be hard to narrow it down. Definitely Betty Ross, she’s the one who made the American flag, right? George Washington would probably be another one. And my Grandpa Whiteley.

US: Have you seen any good movies lately?

Whitely: No, not really. I saw “Wild Hogs.” It was funny.

US: What is your favorite kind of food?

Whitely: Italian.

US: Do you think there are any good Italian places in Logan?

Whitely: No. I mean, there’s Olive Garden, but I think it’s Americanized. I haven’t been to Italy, but when I was in Pittsburgh there was a town in Bloomfield called Little Italy. A lot of people were from Italy, and they would prepare authentic food. It was fun because you would start with a big meal and then they would give you huge meatballs. I mean, they were gigantic! Then we would have dessert. And then salad. And they had this really good cake.

US: Are you going to participate in the Finals Week Howl?

Whitely: Yes. If I’m in the library, I’ll do it in the library. But I’ll support it wherever I’m at because I’m an Aggie.

US: Have you ever had a recurring dream?

Whitely: Yes, that I’ve woken up late for an exam. I hate those dreams. And now with finals coming up, I have to set two alarms.

US: If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Whitely: I would fly. Definitely. Because then I could just go to all the places I would want to. And I would be able to help people too because I could get to them faster.
