College Football Preview Tabs Four Aggies To Preseason All-WAC Teams
Four Utah State football players were named to the Lindy’s College Football Preview all-WAC teams. Junior DE Ben Calderwood was tabbed to the first-team list, while senior WR Kevin Robinson, senior OL Pace Jorgenson and sophomore LB Paul Igboeli were on the second-team.
Calderwood, a native of Smithfield, Utah (Sky View HS), was named second-team all-WAC last season after leading USU’s defensive linemen with 44 tackles despite missing two games. He also was second on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss and tied for second in sacks with two. Calderwood earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 9 after USU’s win against Fresno State, in which his nine tackles against the Bulldogs were the most by an Aggie lineman since 2003.
Robinson, from Fresno, Calif. (Hoover HS), led the team with 36 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. He produced two 100-yard receiving games with a career-best 141 at Louisiana Tech and 101 in the season finale against New Mexico State. Robinson enters his senior season eighth on USU’s career receiving touchdowns list with 16. Kendal Smith (1986-88) holds the top spot with 25 TD catches.
Jorgenson, a native of Grantsville, Utah (Grantsville HS) has 27 career starts, which leads the team. Last season he started 11 of 12 games, missing only the Louisiana Tech game due to injury, and he had started 18 consecutive games before the LTU contest.
Igboeli, from Grand Prairie, Texas (South Grand Prairie HS), earned Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honors last year after finishing second on the team with 69 tackles. He was the leading freshman tackler in the WAC, and ranked 15th in the league overall. Igboeli also ranked eighth in the WAC in tackles for loss with 8.5, and also had three sacks. He forced fumbles on two of his sacks and they were returned for touchdowns by USU against Louisiana Tech and Boise State. Igboeli had three double-digit tackle games including 17 at Louisiana Tech, 10 at Boise State and 10 vs. New Mexico State.
Utah State opens the 2007 season on Thursday, Aug. 30, hosting UNLV in a 6 p.m. kick off at Romney Stadium.
