LETTER: Demos look to failed policies

Editor,

I would like to thank the College Democrats for officially aligning themselves with the Pride! Alliance and the Socialist Student Union. Nobody should have any doubts now as to where the Democrats wish to take this country.

Evidently the College Democrats approve of using taxpayer dollars to fund viewings of “Mormon Erotica” and would like to see us attempt the tried and true (or should I say miserably failed) policies of the U.S.S.R.

Let’s start with the war in Iraq. I am getting tired of hearing accusations that the president lied to us about the war. Remember that before we went in there was never any debate about whether Saddam had WMD’s. There is a lot of evidence that Saddam thought he had them as well. To say the president made it up means that Germany, France, Russia and every other country were also making it up.

Next we should examine the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party. They wanted us to go to Bosnia to stop the bloodshed. They wanted us to go to Kosovo, Haiti, and Liberia as well. But when we go to Iraq and stop the filling of mass graves, they are appalled. They support the regime of Saddam Hussein in the name of peace and justice. Talk about a set of mixed priorities.

Finally, I want to examine the claims that Bush is hurting the poor and the economy. When Bush was inaugurated, the recession that had begun in 2000 was just coming into gear. Nine months later, terrorists attacked us and crippled much of the economy. Yet with all of these problems, our economy is on the upswing. You can either try to help businesses so they can hire more people and improve the economy, or you can attack them.

In short, the Democrats are looking to the failed policies of the past for their vision of the future. If you truly want to have an honest and open discussion that focuses on new possibilities instead of stale vitriol, I suggest you come to a meeting of the College Republicans, the true progressives on campus.
