LETTER: Evolutions doesn’t agree

Editor,

There was recently an article concerning a professor from Idaho State University who presented his views in favor of the theory of evolution. It was also stated that he was a bishop in the LDS church. I must say that as a convert to the LDS faith that I was quite shocked. I was not shocked that he believed in evolution. I was shocked because he stated that there was no reason for Mormonism and evolution to conflict with each other.

Knowing that both members of the LDS faith and those of other faiths would be reading this article caused me to become very concerned about how they may view his comments.

For those of you who are LDS, to you I say, follow the prophet. Don’t get too excited. Just because the speaker is a member of the church does not mean he is not entitled to his own opinion. He is not speaking as the authority of the church, but merely from his professional and scientific opinion.

For those of other faiths, I would ask that you understand that this is not where the church stands on the issue. We believe in living prophets who lead our church and it is from them that we seek the doctrine that serves as the foundation of our religion.
