Tennis shutout by NAU
Despite winning their second doubles match of the day, the women’s tennis team couldn’t hold on against Northern Arizona Saturday.
Richelle Moon and Courtney Anderson gave USU their only victory by winning the number two doubles against Ashley Dille and Christina Klokinis of NAU.
Despite the early loss, NAU walked away with a 7-0 shutout win. It was their fifth straight victory, improving their record to 5-9.
The Aggies fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 at home. They are also 1-8 when they lose the doubles point.
“They’re a good team, they’ve been solid over the years,” said USU Head Coach Christian Wright of the Lumberjacks. “They were a little more steady than we were.”
According to Wright, the Aggies had many opportunities to get the points, but their execution was what hurt them.
“We were setting up points pretty well,” he said. “I felt like we competed well. It very easily could have been 7-0 for us.”
In the singles sets, Lindsey Bennion won her first game against Jean Wilmann while Moon won her first game against Julie Schmandt, but both ladies dropped the last two.
Overall, Wright said the match was much closer than the final score, but the Aggies couldn’t prevail when it counted most.
“Our effort was good,” Wright said.
USU will try for its first home victory when it hosts Portland April 2 at 1 p.m.
