Former Aggie runner wins DesNews marathon

Former Utah State track athlete Carol Cabanillas won the 2007Deseret Morning News/KJZZ-TV Marathon held in Salt Lake City on Tuesday. Cabanillas crossed the finish line with a time of 2:53.24, nearly 15 minutes ahead of the second-place finisher. Cabanillas ran cross country and competed in both indoor & outdoor track for Utah State from 2000-03.

“I just crashed at 16 (miles) and figured I was running so slow I should just drop out, but there was no one else there,” Cabanaillas told the Deseret Morning News.

Cabanaillas said she only trained eight weeks for the event.

Utah State had another former athlete perform well on Tuesday as former All-American Trevor Ball finished fourth in the 10K race with a time of 30:15. Ball earned All-America honors in cross country in 2005. He was also the Big West Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2004 and the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2005.
