Dean of Business resigns from USU
Dr. Caryn Beck-Dudley, Utah State Univesity’s dean of the College of Business, is resigning to take a position as the dean of Florida State University’s Business College.
FSU’s Provost and Executive Vice President Lawrence G. Abele announced the new appointment Nov. 22.
“We are extremely pleased to have someone with Caryn Beck-Dudley’s experience and energy, and I know I speak for all of the College of Business and the entire faculty of Florida State University when I welcome her to Tallahassee,” Abele said, as quoted in a press release issued by FSU.
Beck-Dudley is originally from American Fork, Utah. She graduated from USU magna cum laude in political science and earned a law degree from Idaho State University.
After working for a time as an attorney with a firm in Salt Lake City, Beck-Dudley took a position as a professor in the management and human resources department at USU, where she taught business law, employment law, and business ethics. She became the first woman to be Dean of the College of Business in July 2002.
During her time as Dean, according to the press release, she established a Career and Exploration Center to help business students establish a career path, advocated a proposal for a new PhD in the business department and implemented new processes to make donating to the college easier.
On her Web site within the College of Business site, Beck-Dudley lists that she was a recipient of the Kay Duffy Memorial Award in 1998, as well as numerous research and teaching awards from 1988-99 and was named one of Utah’s Visionaries: 30 Women to Watch in 2004.
Also on the Web site are listed other accomplishments during her time as dean. These include re-introducing a college newsletter, “create new and increase existing scholarships,” and decreasing the size of the graduate program to improve academic standards.
Although the move took members of USU’s public relations department by surprise, Beck-Dudley said she is looking forward to it.
“My family and I are very excited to join Florida State University,” said Dr. Beck-Dudley, as quoted in the FSU press release.
“The College of Business is one of the leading business schools in the country and provides a number of opportunities for continued excellence.”
