Women’s tennis to play back-to-back matches

The Utah Sate University women’s tennis team will be playing the role of hostess this weekend as Northern Arizona University and Southern Utah University come to Logan.

First it will play NAU Friday at noon at the Sports Academy. So far this season the Lumberjacks have compiled a 4-11 record and lost to Boise State University March 18, 4-3, in their last match. The Lumberjacks do have a tough No. 1 singles player in senior Susanna Wallin, who is a three-time member of the All Big Sky Conference team, and has the highest winning percentage. She’ll battle Utah State’s No. 1 singles player, Sarah Lowe.

Meanwhile, SUU has been on somewhat of a tear this season, going 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Mid-Continent Conference play. The T-Birds won three in a row last weekend at the Mid-Continent Conference Duel in Kansas City.

Though the T-Birds do have a fairly inexperienced team, four of the eight players are freshmen, and they’re led by only one senior.

The Aggies have also been playing well. Junior Tracy Bertagna and Lowe have each posted four victories this spring. Bertagna, playing at the No. 4 singles, should also have a good match against SUU senior Melinda Wilkins, who swept three singles matches last weekend.

“Tracy has been playing well,” said head coach Chris Wright. “She and freshman Amelia Martinez each played great in Hawaii as new doubles partners.”

The Aggies will play the T-Birds at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sports Academy.
