OUR VIEW: Voter turnout good, still should be better

Utah State students should be commended. Voter turnout for Associated Students of USU primary elections was higher than it’s been for the last two years.

Two years ago, roughly 3,500 went to the polls, while last year turnout took a considerable dip at about 2,500. This year, 4,014 decided to cast ballots in the primaries.

While turnout has been higher this season, it could still be much better. ASUSU officials hoped more students would vote this year than ever before.

Students should know that by voting, they are lending a voice as to how the university is governed.

Student voters this week will choose the members of next year’s ASUSU Executive Council, a legislative body that assists in making university policy and working out issues like tuition and fees, campus facilities and academic concerns. ASUSU also plans popular student activities like Homecoming and the Howl.

Are students annoyed so much by the various campaign antics they don’t want to cast a vote? Do they feel their voices don’t matter?

They do. Students should stop being apathetic and click on the election link on the USU Webmail home page this week and vote.

It will take less than five minutes for students to choose the representatives making choices that affect the entire student body.
