Moonlight and Music lights up USU

Sarah West

With an attendance of about 2,000 people, Monday night saw the birth of the biggest Moonlight and Music yet.

An impressive turnout.

As part of WOW week, the Student Activities Board sponsored this year’s first free concert of the Moonlight and Music series.

Kathy Leslie, activies vice president for Assiociated Students of Utah State University, said the Moonlight and Music series has been a tradition.

STAB usually holds Moonlight and Music twice a year, Leslie said, but they’re going to try to hold it as much as possible.

“It’s one of my goals to make the series bigger and better,” Leslie said.

Monday night’s performers were guitarists Jake Lott, Asher Sevick and headliner Kalai.

Lott is currently a USU student; the other two are well known in Salt Lake City, Leslie said.

Phil Leffler, a junior majoring in anthropology, was working the sound for the event and said Kalai is “Utah’s very own folk singer. He has really made a name for himself over the years.”

Headliner Kalai says he goes by his last name because his first name, Kanielakaleialiiokalani is too long.

Born in Hawaii and raised in Alaska, Kalai said he does a lot of shows and that his favorite part is the intensity and suspense.

Comparing his shows to racing, Kalai said, “It’s fun to race, but it’s more fun to be done racing.”

In the summer months, Kalai does half of his shows inside, and the other half outdoors, similar to what happened at moonlight and music.

Amy Moulton, a senior majoring in english education, heard about the moonlight and music series through WOW week.

She said it was a great idea, especially when there is good weather.

Leslie said things got a little “iffy” at times with the crowd, but overall it went really well.Ed in Chief 8/31/04 what did she mean by this?

She also said all three performers had nothing but good things to say about the campus, and Sevick said it was a great crowd.

“There was such a good response with the audience and the performers,” Leslie said.

Shawn Hurst, a junior majoring in business, said, “I think for the beginning of the year this is an awesome, social, interactive engagement.”

He also said it is such a great way to meet new people.

The next Moonlight and Music will be held Sept. 21 from 8 to11 p.m. at the Old Main Amphitheater and will feature Haesenpfeffer and the Bomdiggity.
