Memory, health and aging topic of lecture at USU

The final Friends of University Libraries lecture at Utah State University looks at a topic of interest to many – the process and consequences of aging.

Martin Toohill of the Cache County Study on Memory, Health and Aging based at Utah State University, is the guest speaker. His presentation is Wednesday, July 21, at 4 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center, room 046. The building is located south of the Taggart Student Center and the room is on the lower level. Seating is limited (140 seats) and an early arrival is recommended. The lecture is free.

“Memory, Health and Aging” is the topic of Toohill’s lecture, and he will draw information from the Cache County study.

“One of the things I will talk about is the people involved in the study,” Toohill said. “I’m struck by the population and the willingness of the people to share information and to become involved.”

Additionally, Toohill will discuss some of the details of the study, illustrating his lecture with slides. He will discuss scientific findings, but also discuss what is “normal” in memory performance among the population. He will also bring fresh insights from the International Alzheimer’s meeting held in Philadelphia days before his lecture.

“I won’t get into a lot of the scientific and technical information in the study,” he said. “My job is to look at the data – as a psychologist, that’s what I do – and address what is normal. I’ll share some clinical lore and share what I’ve seen.”

Toohill earned his doctorate from Utah State University in 1994 in professional-scientific psychology and research and evaluation methodology. For the past 10 years he has worked primarily in clinical psychology settings in Oregon, Arizona and Virginia. He and his family returned to Logan in January.
