Aggie falls to Nevada on the road
The Utah State men’s basketball team fell to The University of Nevada, Reno on Saturday by a score of 62-54. The loss drops the Aggies to 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference while Nevada improved to a perfect 4-0.
“The whole thing was really disappointing,” said USU head coach Stew Morrill. “We didn’t have near enough edge or competitiveness. That’s on me. I’m not blaming anybody but myself.”
The Aggies out-rebounded the Wolf Pack by a 13 with 48 total rebounds. They also had 21 offensive rebounds to Nevada’s eight. But despite all of the offensive rebounds, they only made four baskets for second-chance points.
Jarred Shaw had 19 points in his second game back from a five-game suspension he served in December. Shaw was not helped much in scoring by the rest of his team.
No other Aggie player reached double digits in the game. Kyle Davis was next in line, but he had just nine points. Outside of Shaw and Davis, USU shot less than 28 percent from the field and just 31.8 percent overall as a team.
“I’ve never seen them miss shots like that,” Shaw said. “Our whole team, we were just missing shots that we normally make and we just need to get back to the gym on Monday and work on those shots.”
USU also struggled from beyond the arc, making just two of the 16 3-pointers they attempted over the course of the game.
“Too many threes,” Morrill said. “I mean, if you can’t make a three, quit shooting them. Don’t go 2-16.”
Despite the shooting troubles, USU still found itself in the game late, down just six points with less than four minutes to play. However, they could not take advantage.
“Their defense was OK, but I kind of feel like we just beat ourselves,” Shaw said. “We missed shots that we normally make, but we’ll change that. We’ll turn it around.”
USU will take on Colorado State at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
“They are always physical, and they always rebound the heck out of the ball,” Morrill said about Colorado State. “If we just wilt, it will be a long night. We’ve got to buck up and know that is an issue.”
