Student housing complex may help with parking

Utah State University officials are planning a new complex that will house 500 students, and a proposal was passed by the Logan Municipal Council to further open doors for the complex to be developed.

Tentative plans for a “living learning center” were discussed at Tuesday’s municipal council meeting. The proposal was passed with full support by the council for planning to continue. The proposed site for the housing center is at 600 North between 700 and 800 East.

Mark Nielsen, Public Works director for Logan City, said the new housing will be referred to as a living learning center because it will help “provide an atmosphere of learning.”

Nielsen said studies have been done showing that students who live on campus do better with their school work.

The proposal is for a four-story building with a parking terrace accessible to students at 800 East. The parking terrace will offer many spaces for students, more than just for those residing in the new living center.

After the council approved the proposal, it opened more doors for USU to continue plans for the building, showing that they are in compliance with city laws and ordinances.

According to council member Steven Taylor, the complex isn’t a done deal yet, and a lot still has to be coordinated with adjacent property owners.

USU officials intend that the housing center won’t cost the city anything, and all expenses will be incurred by the university.

Nielsen said he doesn’t know yet when the complex would be started or finished, and that plans are still tentative.

Many other issues were discussed at the bi-weekly meeting held at the Municipal Chambers. A report was given by a Logan citizen who served with the U.S. troops in Afghanistan for nine months, and the council and mayor discussed keeping cars in check with emission goals, planning a free-emissions testing day in April.
