Utah Gov. to celebrate women’s history
Utah Gov. Olene S. Walker will visit Utah State University Tuesday to help celebrate National Women’s History Month.
The theme of National Women’s History Month is “Women Inspiring Hope and Possibilities.” The Women’s Center and The Women’s Leadership Class are providing several activities to celebrate women’s history. Walker, who was sworn in as Utah’s first female governor on Nov. 5, 2003, will speak Tuesday at noon in the Taggart Student Center Sunburst Lounge.
A free concert featuring music, visual arts, poetry and multimedia will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the TSC Auditorium to recognize women and their talents and contributions to society.
Thursday at noon in the Sunburst Lounge, a panel of speakers will talk about what has inspired them in their personal and professional lives, some of the limitations or benefits they have encountered because of their sex and how they think the status of women is changing in our society.
The first 20 attendees at each event will receive a free National Women’s History T-shirt.
Calling for diversity award nominations
It is time to solicit nominations for the 11th Annual Utah State University Diversity Awards. One individual from each of the following categories will be recognized for furthering the principles and values of affirmative action, equal opportunity and diversity: Student, faculty, administrator, staff and community member.
To nominate an individual, write a nomination letter of no more than two pages, formatted to address the above criteria, and submit it to the AA/EO Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 26. Letters can also be faxed ((435) 797-1266) or e-mailed to carolynw@champ.usu.edu.
Award recipients will be announced this semester and will receive recognition by President Kermit L. Hall next fall.
San Francisco trip open to students
There are a few more spots available for students to take a trip to San Francisco.
The trip, sponsored by the USU Art Guild, is from March 31 to April 4. Students will have the opportunity to attend gallery openings, visit art museums, meet new people and learn about San Francisco culture. Cost is $170. Call Aubrie at 764-0768 for more information or to sign up.
Utah Democrat to speak on Tuesday
Scott Matheson, a candidate for the Democratic ticket for governor, will be speaking to students Tuesday in the Taggart Student Center Auditorium at 12:30 p.m.
The event is sponsored by the ASUSU Public Affairs Board, USU College Democrats and the political science honor society. All students are invited. A question and answer period will follow Matheson’s presentation.
Singers and dancers needed for show
Auditions for singers, dancers, and character roles the “Celebrate America Show” will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Greenville School, (400 E. 2450 North in North Logan, by the new hospital).
The Celebrate America Show is an evening of dinner, big band dancing and a Broadway-style show held in the USU Ballroom.
Six male singers, six female singers and 12 female dancers are needed. Singers should come prepared to sing two songs (one should be a ballad). An accompanist will be provided. Singers and dancers need to wear clothing they can dance in. Character roles include Bob Hope, Miss World, and a master of ceremonies. Performers must appear youthful (college age). A stage manager, a set manager, and costume and technical help are also needed.
