Restrictions on burning extended
The Bear River Health Department is extending its “Red, Yellow and Green” wood-burning restriction program another two weeks because weather conditions could lead to more days with unhealthy air-pollution levels.
The program usually runs from Nov. 1 to March 1, but health officials decided last week to extend it until March 14.
“Conditions still exist for inversions to happen and for pollution levels to go up,” said Grant Koford, an environmental health scientist at the Bear River Health Department.
The restrictions prohibit the use of wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and other sources of unclean combustion on days when the air is particularly susceptible to pollution. A mandatory “red, yellow and green light” program has been in effect for several years along the Wasatch Front. The program started on a voluntary basis in Cache County two years ago and became mandatory last year.
Safe Spring Break information available
Tuesday and Wednesday the Wellness Center and the undergraduates of the Counseling Center will host the Safe Spring Break information booth on the Taggart Student Center patio. There will be free Spring Break items like sun block, condoms and information packets on how to enjoy your break safely.
“The idea here is not to tell people to not drink, but rather to be responsible in all of their activities, be it drinking or playing in the sun,” said Reginald Jennings, a volunteer at the counseling center.
The table will be set up from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the two days. One of the main reasons for the information booth is to build awareness about the risks of some Spring Break activities.
Joe Kotynek, a volunteer at the Counseling Center, says “Parties can end in car wrecks, DUI’s, and rape if you don’t take a few simple precautions.”
The goal is to help support the community and have an enjoyable time while on break.
ASUSU elections senate ballot order
The ballot order for ASUSU Senate candidates was announced last week. Primary elections will be held for the offices of HASS Senator, Business Senator, Engineering Senator and Ag Senator. There is only one candidate in the race for Natural Resources Senator.
