Career fair can bring job opportunities

Career Services at Utah State University, to help students land jobs in an uncertain job market, is hosting a career fair next week.

The 15th annual Career Fair will be Wednesday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the second floor of the Taggart Student Center. More than 140 organizations representing a host of careers and job opportunities are scheduled to attend. The event is open and free to community members as well as students.

“This event is a great way for students to set themselves apart from the competition,” said Melissa Scheaffer, assistant director of Utah State’s Career Services. “It gives them a one-on-one connection with employers they can’t get by posting an electronic resume on a Web site. We try to ensure a good cross-section of employers to attract students from all majors.”

Scheaffer recommends students come prepared with a list of specific, researched companies they are interested in. She also suggests students dress professionally, bring resumes and prepare a 30-second pitch about themselves and their skills.

“It is a waste of time to wander aimlessly throughout the fair,” Scheaffer said. “It’s too big, so students will probably be intimidated if they don’t have some background information and a plan of who to talk to. The key is to make a good first-impression and then follow up with potential organizations after the fair.”

Water quality public meeting scheduled

A public meeting has been scheduled for March 4 at 7 p.m., in the Newton Town Hall regarding conditions in several Cache Valley bodies of water.

The Utah Division of Water Quality has completed a draft report of water quality conditions in Clarkston Creek, Newton Reservoir and Newton Creek. These water bodies have been identified as being impaired by total phosphorus and lack of dissolved oxygen. This impairment affects the waters’ beneficial use for aquatic wildlife.

Clean water supports a variety of beneficial uses in Utah and is one of the state’s most valuable resources. When pollutants impair these uses, a study is required by the Clean Water Act to determine how to reduce the pollutants and restore all beneficial uses. This study is called a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). A TMDL establishes the amount of a pollutant allowed in the water. Utah is required by law to identify polluted waters and to develop TMDL’s to help address the problems.

Scottish interior designer to visit USU

Malcolm W. Duffin, an interior designer from Edinburgh, Scotland, is the next featured speaker in the Visiting Interior Designer Series at Utah State University.

Duffin speaks Wednesday, March 3, at 4:30 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center Auditorium. The event is free and the public is invited.

Duffin’s presentation is “Great Houses of Scotland.” In addition to his lecture, Duffin will be on campus for a week working with students in the university’s interior design program.

Duffin is a noted figure in interior design and decoration in Scotland. He started his career at age 16 as an apprentice to the late James Thomson, an influential designer in Great Britain. He completed his first commission at age 17 and continued gaining his professional qualifications through a combination of night school classes and correspondence courses. He worked for a time in London with several design greats before returning to Scotland to open his own design practice.
