Ice center offers public programs

Students can get an early start on winter activities by visiting one of the coldest places in the valley, the George S. Eccles Ice Center.

The center, which offers several programs to the public, caters to nearly every age group and skating skill level.

HOCKEY

Hockey season has begun, which means practices are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. USU hockey games are on Friday or Saturday at 8 p.m.

Carissa Anderson, who has worked at the ice center for more than five years, said the hockey games get a pretty big turnout.

“Last Friday there were over 1,300 people there,” she said.

Cost of attendance is $4 for students with IDs or $6 for adults. Season tickets are also available.

BROOMBALL

Broomball is a new program offered at the Eccles Ice Center. According to the center’s press release, the game is similar to hockey, but with no shoes. Broomball is offered Fridays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., and the cost is $4.50. Groups of 12 or more can play for $3.50 each.

PUBLIC SKATING

Anderson said general public skating is the center’s most popular program. Skating is offered regularly, but times change daily and can be checked on the center’s schedule. The cost is $4 for adults, $3 for children 8 and under and for seniors 55 and over.

Anderson said the current group special is $1 off admission for 20 or more people. Skate rental is $1.50.

Family Night is every Thursday during general public skating times. Up to eight people can skate for $12 together, which includes the skate rental.

PARTIES

Birthday parties can also be booked at the Eccles Ice Center. Up to 10 guests and two adults can attend for $115, including a party room for one hour, a birthday cake or pizza, drinks and decorations.

Company parties are also available, with options based on the number of people, according to the center’s Web site.

LESSONS

Learn-To-Skate classes are also offered at the Ice Center. Anderson said winter hours are Tuesdays at 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. The cost is $45 for six weekly sessions.

Sessions are half an hour long, and all ages are welcome, Anderson said.

Hockey Learn-to-Skate classes are also available during Learn-to-Skate times.

CURLING

The Olympic sport curling is also offered at the ice center and is played Mondays from 7:45 to 9:30 p.m.

According to the Web site, the center is also involved in assisting the Boy Scouts of America, the Special Olympic, and School Outreach involving kindergarten through the 12th grade.

All programs, except for general public skating and broomball, include skate rentals.

The center is located at 2825 N. 200 East in North Logan. Scheduling times can be viewed at ecclesice.com or by calling 787-2288.
