San Juan Campus to host Uto-Aztecan Linguistics Conference

Utah State University College of Eastern Utah – San Juan Campus to host Uto-Aztecan Linguistics Conference

The USU College of Eastern Utah – San Juan Campus and Brian Stubbs (emeritus English faculty) will be hosting the annual Uto-Aztecan Linguistics Conference this year on July 1 and 2 (Friday and Saturday).  Linguists researching in Uto-Aztecan languages come from University of California, Los Angeles; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; University of Arizona; Brigham Young University; University of Utah; and many other universities all over the U.S. and Mexico to meet each year, to share presentations and updates on projects and progress. This year is Mr. Stubbs’ turn to host the event, and San Juan Campus administration has gladly agreed to help sponsor the annual gathering of scholars this year. Two new books being published in time for this conference are A First Preliminary Edition of the White Mesa Ute Dictionary (by Brian Stubbs, Mary Jane Yazzie, Aldean Ketchum, Loretta Posey, and others), and the 5th edition of Stubbs’ Uto-Aztecan Comparative Vocabulary.

The San Juan Campus has several scholars in linguistics and Native American studies programs.  Research and curriculum are steadily evolving.  Events like the Uto-Aztecan Linguistics Conference provide an ongoing network of scholarship opportunities for faculty and students.
