Women’s rugby victorious over Weber

After a close first half, the Utah State University women’s rugby club team pulled away from a combined Weber State University team to earn a 26-5 victory in Ogden.

For 20 minutes at Saturday’s game, the scored remained 0-0 and it was obvious this Weber team was better than the one USU played three weeks ago and beat by nearly 100 points, captain Becca Ogden said.

“[Weber] was more of a Boise [State University] and [Idaho State University] combined team,” she said. “There were seven players from Boise and three from ISU, and about seven Weber players. It was a lot better team.”

With its recruits, Weber was able to hold the Aggies to one try in the first half. The try came about 25 minutes into the game when Ogden found herself with the ball about 50 meters away from the goal line and only one player to beat.

The 50-meter run and the kick after gave the Aggies a 7-0 lead, calming them down a little, Ogden said.

But soon they found themselves fighting to stay ahead.

At the end of the half, Weber was able to put together a drive of its own and after an Aggie penalty 10 yards from the goal line, Weber piled up and pushed the ball in for the try. Weber missed the kick after, ending the half 7-5.

The last 40 minutes were almost a completely different game.

“We pretty much dominated the entire second half,” Ogden said. “I don’t think they even touched our half of the field.”

With the downhill advantage, the Aggies scored three more times, starting off with a second try from Ogden, followed by a try from Brooke Lambert and then Josi Aerhart, giving USU the 26-5 victory.

After the way they played the second half, Ogden said, the Aggies feel pretty good about their victory.

“It took us a while to settle down,” she said. “I don’t know if we were a little nervous or if we were too excited to play because of last week’s game, but we ended up doing all right.”

The win gives the Aggies a 7-6 record for the season.
