OUR VIEW: Want culture? Look no further

What is culture? By definition it is that act of developing by education and training. It is also the refinement of intellectual and artistic taste.

Is that what college is for? Each student is at Utah State University in order to gain knowledge and training. Students pay large amounts of money to get the schooling they desire, whether it be engineering or history. But that is not all. The college years are the ideal time to refine our skills in a myriad of ways.

The university offers plenty of ways to refine our artistic tastes. The Chase Fine Arts Center, on the east end of campus, constantly produces artwork, theatrical productions and concerts to help students gain the culture they deserve. The best part about the events offered is that they are all relatively inexpensive. For USU students there is usually no cost at all.

Unfortunately, most students are unaware of the events taking place and don’t know where to go to find a good schedule. Most of the time the only place the exhibits or productions are advertised is in the fine arts center itself.

More publicity is needed on the part of those producing shows or exhibits. A great place to do this is on the banners on the first floor of the Taggart Student Center and on The Back Burner of The Statesman. Both of these places are free and are seen by a major portion of the student body.

Many students are yearning for culture and would like to know where to go to find it. Take advantage of every aspect of the university experience so we can graduate being well-versed in a variety of areas.
