Aggies prepare for final home game

While classes and finals will be over soon, the Aggie softball team still has work to do. The 5-35 Aggies are still seeking their first home win and first Western Athletic Conference win.

“Obviously we’ve had more downs than ups with losses, but I think overall, the six seniors will leave here having a good experience nonetheless,” Head Coach Lonny Sargent said. “It’s a really good group of kids. They really try as hard as they can. They give us all the effort they have every day and that’s all we as coaches can expect.

Utah State will have just three more chances to pick up a win in Logan, as they host three games against New Mexico State this weekend.

The Friday doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. and the final home game will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.

“We’re trying to finish strong, finish on a good note and everyone will go out having a good summer,” Sargent said.

Saturday marks senior day as Utah State will say goodbye to its six seniors.

“It’s just a good day to come out and celebrate the years these kids have given Utah state and Utah State softball becaue they’ve done a lot for the program and they deserve as much recognition as they can get,” Sargent said.

The Aggies will then travel to Honolulu to face the Warriors in their final three WAC games next weekend.

The WAC tournament will take place in Fresno, Calif., from May 11-May 13. The top six teams in the WAC will participate.

Utah State currently sits at last place in the seven-team conference.

For the Aggies to earn a trip to Fresno, they will need to win at least five of their remaining six games and Lousiana Tech will have to lose all of their remaining games.

“There is a chance,” Sargent said. “It’s along shot. I just know our players are good enough to be able to pull that off and you just never know.”

The Aggies are currently on a 13-game losing streak.

They are 0-7 at home and 0-11 against WAC opponents.
