OUR VIEW: Students should take charge of learning

Accents.

Something students deal with in their classes. Some professors are difficult to understand. And what can be done?

Students need to learn to deal with “foreign” accents. Utah State University has highly able and qualified professors. Many are leaders in their research fields. However, it can be difficult to understand accents other than “American.”

It is up to students to understand other accents to succeed in their careers.

The professional world consists of all ethnicities, cultures and languages. The more willing one is to understand another, the more knowledge there is to gain. Careers require teamwork, and these social skills of understanding will produce capable and profitable employees. Don’t be afraid to ask professors for clarification.

Be brave and bold. Ask questions. Sit near the front. Pay attention. Attentive students will soon find they have fewer communication barriers and the professor will be able to appropriately teach more material.
