Aggie golfers qualify for state tourney

Six current members of the Utah State golf team have qualified for the Utah State Amateur Championships which will take place at Soldier Hollow Golf Club in Midway, Utah, Wednesday and Thursday, July 5-6.

Leading the way for the Aggies is sophomore Brendon Ehlers, who was USU’s top golfer this past season. Ehlers, who is from Evanston, Wyo., had a team-best 73.68 scoring average in 2005-06 and was USU’s top finisher in six of 10 events.

Other Aggies that qualified for the 36-hole stroke play rounds, include Jake Blair from Smithfield, Preston Otte from Burley, Idaho, Jared Humphries from Layton, Justin Copier from Salt Lake City and Brandon Broadhead from Brigham City.

The top 31 players from the 36 hole stroke play will qualify for the match play rounds along with defending champion Michael McRae.

Otte, a senior, was second on the team with a 74.41 scoring average this past season, while Humphries, a junior, was third at 75.16, but played only in the fall. Blair, another junior, averaged 77.00 strokes per round and was the Aggies’ second best finisher at the WAC Championships, tying for 33rd at the league meet.

Copier, also a junior this past year, played in two tournaments for the Aggies, while Broadhead, a freshman, redshirted his first season at Utah State.
