Old Lyric offers family show

The Old Lyric Repertory Company’s 2006 family show is “Story Theatre” by Paul Sills. The family show is the capstone project for the OLRC Apprentice Program.

“Story Theatre” opens Monday, July 24, and continues Tuesday, July 25, Monday, July 31, and Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Caine Lyric Theatre, 28 W. Center, Logan. Curtain time for the family-friendly event is 7:30 p.m.

“Story Theatre” is a collection of fairy tales and fables by the Grimm Brothers and Aesop. Each scene features a different story, and actors portray several characters throughout the production.

One scene includes the classic tale “Fisherman and His Wife.”

The fisherman catches a flounder that is actually a magical wish-granting prince. The fisherman’s wife asks the flounder for more wealth and power, but the greed goes to her head and all is lost.

“The show is a group of fractured fairy tales presented in a non-traditional way,” said Tracie Norton, apprentice coordinator and co-director. “Children will enjoy the varied stories, some of which will be familiar to audiences, while others are lesser known.”

The variety of stories requires versatile scenery and numerous props. The simple set utilizes colorful blocks to facilitate numerous scene changes.

“The simple set and unusual characters allow creativity and imagination,” said Norton. “Actors are able to play a wide range of characters from animals to furniture.”

The OLRC Apprentice Program was founded with the intent of exposing high school juniors and seniors to every aspect of theatre. Seven apprentices were selected this season to assist in production development and to immerse themselves in a professional, theatrical learning environment. Throughout the summer, apprentices have the opportunity to learn from theatre professionals and mentors working with the Old Lyric Repertory Company. The apprentices put their knowledge into practice by producing and performing the annual family show.

“We are excited to put the knowledge we have gained into practice in every facet of the show, from public relations to performance,” said apprentice Madison Beckstead, a student from Preston, Idaho.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12 and can be purchased by calling (435) 752-1500 or by visiting the Caine Lyric Box Office from noon to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The OLRC Apprentice Program is made possible through the generosity of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. The OLRC is supported by grants and gifts from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, the George S. and Delores Doré Eccles Foundation, the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Utah State University, the Cache County Restaurant/RAPZ Tax, the Utah Arts Council and the Bridgerland Travel Council.
