USU prof heads to Portugal for lecture

Utah State University assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering YangQuan Chen will give a Plenary Lecture at the Workshop on Fractional Differentiation July 19-21, in Porto, Portugal.

President of the organizing committee J.A. Tenreiro Machado said Chen was invited to speak because of his significant work in the area of fractional calculus.

According to Chen, he stumbled upon fractional order calculus while working at a disk-drive manufacturing company in 1999.

“I had never heard of it until I discovered the patent,” said Chen. “I was interested, so I began talking to people and have been studying it ever since.”

Chen has given presentations on the subject at numerous gatherings and has also held tutorial training sessions.

In 2004, Chen attended the workshop on fractional differentiation held in Bordeaux, France. “It was an exciting event with great entertainment,” said Chen.

Chen also researches intelligent industrial control and mechatronics, robust and optimal distributed control systems, information fusion and computer vision and biomedical engineering applications. Four U.S. patents have been granted to Chen, while eight are pending.
