University working to be wireless campus

Utah State University is slowing moving to the world of wireless and is looking for students’ help.

Currently there are 146 wireless access points on campus where students can connect to the Internet with their laptops. However, the University Wide Information Network committee is working to make USU’s campus completely wireless, Merry Lu Veller from the office of information technology.

“We’re by no means a completely wireless campus yet and not really even close, but we don’t want to fall behind,” Veller said.

The committee has developed a survey under the direction of Information Technology Vice President M.K. Jeppesen to get input from students and faculty about their favorite computing spots on campus.

“Students are out there pushing the technology and requesting more access, and this is one way their voices can be heard,” Jeppesen said. “We need their input as we move forward with this initiative.”

The university began installing wireless access points about four years ago as wireless began increasing in popularity, Veller said. Although USU’s wireless network has never reached capacity, officials expect that use with continue to increase. The university continues to install access points as it is able.

“We don’t have a bucket of money to put in access points but we have put them in slowly as student shave requested them,” Veller said.
