Executive Council: More scholarships being offered to USU sophmores
Next year’s sophomore’s at Utah State University who are looking for a job to help pay for school may not need too look very far.
Beginning 2007, the ASUSU Academic Senate will set aside $20,000 they receive from Tier II Tuition and give it back to sophomores in need. Scholarships are traditionally offered to incoming freshman and transfer students as an enticement for enrollment.
The action came about after academic senators polled students in their individual colleges and learned the most frequent concern was for more scholarships, especially for non- freshmen
Individual departments offer scholarships to their students, based on need and merit. Those who receive no scholarships at their original time of admission or from their department can turn to federal financial aid.
Many students on campus receive no financial aid at all. Ten, $2,000 scholarships will be available through the Academic Senate. Applicants must have completed one full academic year at USU, have completed 24 but no more than 45 credits, be a full time student during the semester they plan to receive the scholarship and carry a 3.50 cumulative GPA.
“It’s kind of a unique scholarship,” College of Science Senator Tim Peterson said. “It’s an actual student-elected scholarship rather than an administrative body [choosing the recipients].”
