USU’s Hulbert ties for 21st in Nationals

USU’S HULBERT DROPS BACK ON FINAL DAY OF NCAA HEPTATHLON

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After entering the final day of the heptathlon in 10th place, Utah State’s Lacey Hulbert struggled in the final three events and dropped to a tie for 21st at the NCAA Track and Field Championships here on Saturday.

The senior from Sandy, Utah posted three of her lowest four scores in the seven-event heptathlon on Saturday, scoring just 780 points in the 800, 623 in the long jump and 471 in the javelin. She had averaged 800.75 points in the first four events on Friday.

Hulbert was 25th in the long jump with a leap of 5.23 meters (17-02) to start the final day with the other 27 competitors. Hulbert then threw the javelin 29.71 meters (97-06) and finished 26th in that event. She then closed the competition with a 17th place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:23.27.

Hulbert’s 21st place finish at the national meet tied for the best performance by an Aggie as Vance Twitchell and Stacie Lifferth also placed 21st in their respective races in the steeplechase.

In all, USU had a school-record eight qualifiers for this year’s national meet. Five of those athletes will return to the team next year in juniors DJ Smith, who qualified in the 100, Twitchell (steeplechase), Amber Judd (400 hurdles), Jennifer Twitchell (1,500) and sophomore Lifferth (steeplechase).
