LETTER: Concern for backpacks

Editor,

Like Mr. Peterson and many others, I am concerned with the neglect of the campus bookstore for its customers’ belongings. However, there is a very simple solution: Ignore the leave-your-backpack-outside policy. For about the past two years I have been ignoring this policy (ever since my brother had his backpack stolen from the racks).

In this time I have never actually been confronted about bringing my backpack into the bookstore. If ever I am confronted I will do what my wife does: Ask whether the bookstore will guarantee the security of my belongings (e.g. with a secure backpack check.) If not, I will offer the bookstore the privilege of searching my backpack as I leave. I don’t think they would find this unacceptable.

If everyone would ignore this ridiculous policy eventually the bookstore would drop it.
