USU Family Life Center Receives $15,000 Grant from American Express
The Family Life Center’s Housing and Financial Counseling Program at Utah State University has been awarded a $15,000 grant award from American Express.
The fiscal support granted by American Express will aid in providing the resources and training necessary to strengthen the center’s mortgage default and financial management education. The funding provided by American Express will help the organization provide more financial counseling services in Northern Utah to meet the growing demand, expand and improve services through outreach and train two new counselors.
“The cost of poor financial decisions made by households often gets shifted onto other members of the community, the state and the nation through higher financial product prices and greater use of public assistance,” said, Lucy Delgadillo, associate professor in the Department of Family, Consumer and Human Development and Co-principal investigator on the grant. A goal of the Family Life Center is to facilitate self-sustainable households, both homeowners and renters, and to improve their financial skills. This is why housing and financial counseling is so essential in our area.”
The Family Life Center provides group workshops and counseling in four main areas – pre-purchase counseling, reverse mortgage, financial management and mortgage delinquency. The Family Life Center is open to any individual or family who is seeking help with housing or financial management concerns.
The Center offers monthly workshops on a variety of topics, as well as one-on-one counseling to address specific issues. The mission of the Family Life Center is to create a community of families who are knowledgeable about housing and who effectively manage their financial resources. Clients who attend the financial workshops can increase their knowledge of spending plans, cutting expenses, saving and investing, credit, debt management, goal setting, consumer spending tips, foreclosure prevention, insurance and more.
All materials and services at the Family Life Center are available in both English and Spanish. Every client of the Family Life Center completes a detailed budget and signs an action plan listing their specific goals.
