LETTER: Vote for men and women of God

To the Editor:

November elections are approaching. Which candidates deserve our votes?

The Founding Fathers taught that the key to good government is more than enacting good and just laws. It is electing good men and women to office. For whom would the Founding Fathers vote? They believed that the quality of the candidate’s personal life and character was critical. They believed in electing men of God.

Many of the constitutions of the original thirteen colonies required elected officials to take pledges affirming their belief in God, His Son, and the Bible before they took office. This is because our Republic was founded upon the premise that governments are instituted to protect our God-given rights. Therefore, His principles are applicable to governments of men.

Consider the following quotes: From Noah Webster in his “History of the United States,” used for generations in public schools: “When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public office, then let it be impressed upon your minds that God commands you to chose as rulers, ‘just men who will rule in the fear of God.’ The preservation of our government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty.”

From John Jay, first Supreme Court Chief Justice: “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”

The Founding Fathers taught that if ungodly men were elected to office it would lead to the downfall of our nation. What would they say about our current politicians?

In our Republic, we as citizens are responsible to put effort into researching the candidates and voting for the candidate who will support the Constitution and the principles upon which our nation was founded. We can no longer separate a candidate’s private life from his or her public life, for is it not what one does in private that determines one’s character? Both of the major parties have become corrupt. It is time for us as citizens and patriots to move in a new direction.
