LETTER: Liberal rants unreasonable
To the Editor:
It has always interested me how those who call themselves publicly liberal seem to carry a chip on their shoulder. As I have read many of the so called “liberal” views in The Statesman, and it is quite interesting that, more than an opinion to enlighten, it seems like a rant. It seems as if this writer, unfortunately, has been offended by all who would dare to call themselves conservative, Mormon, or heaven forbid, Republican. They throw out jabs at groups that would defend their own beliefs calling them judgmental, and intolerant, while in the same breath they are using the exact contempt they are condemning against those of us who aren’t quite so “enlightened.”
As they speak of things that border on socialism they corrupt the system that has supported the most successful country in the world. Does our system have problems? Yes. But would you rather be in a system that allows no one to excel? They talk of a system that would make all people successful, but only to a certain point, because if they went past that development your plan would be ruined. Instead we would all be the same, and breed mediocrity in everything we do.
It is unfortunate for those people who get the wrong picture about a group as a whole because of experiences with people in that group. It is more unfortunate when those who are offended perpetuate such offenses by making blanket statements. They speak of “inclusion, not exclusion” while at the same time painting a picture that conservatives are completely wrong and have no virtues themselves. In short they often sound like just another politician ranting on a soap box instead of a reasonable person. They use words like freedom and rights, while condemning those who would give it to others, but that’s a discussion for another time.
