Tough day for women’s tennis

After a strong showing in the opening rounds, the Utah State women’s tennis team was defeated Friday at the Intermountain Tennis Association Mountain Region tournament in Las Vegas.

Senior Jaci West and sophomore McKenzie Davis both led the way for the Aggies with second round victories in singles play. West won in three sets over Mary Meyers of the Air Force Academy (4-6, 6-4, 6-4). Davis also took care of her opponent, Char Hjalmarsson from Montana State University 6-1, 6-1.

The third round, however, proved more difficult for the duo. West fell to UNLV’s Aleksandra Josifoska, ranked No. 89 in the nation, 6-1, 6-0, while Davis was defeated by Wyoming’s Alexander Kovacs in a three-setter (6-4, 4-6, 6-1), ending the Aggies’ tournament run.

Sophomore Hillary Hays also played Friday for the Aggies and lost in the second round to the nation’s No. 43 Lucia Batta of UNLV (6-3, 6-0).

With the losses, the Aggie women finished one of their most successful fall seasons in recent memory. They will resume play in January.
