BLOG: Not another boring weekend

Quince Van Orden

Do you enjoy laughing?

Of course you do; if you don’t I would see a doctor. A fellow classmate of my High School Kelci Haws once said, “Laughter fills in the pot-holes of life.” I find that statement to be very true and have a much deeper meaning then she may have expected. I cannot count the times when I was sad, depressed, stressed or worried that a little comedy hasn’t cheered me up. So my suggestion is to get a little laughter in your life this weekend. I once heard that children laugh over at least 10,000 more times than us adults. Oh how I envy that.

I suggest going the Logan Arthouse and Cinema to provide the laughter. They are located at 795 North Main across from Smith’s. Every Friday night at 10:30 p.m. the hilarious improv comedy group called the Antics perform. Improv comedy is comedy acts made up on the spot; for those who don’t know what this is, it was made famous by the funny T.V. show “Who’s Line is it Anyway.”

The Antics is comprised of at least 13 actors who are all students at USU.  Their show is family friendly and goes until midnight. I’ve seen their show often and many times they have had me on the edge of my seat laughing.

The Antics is in need of our support. Chris Parsons stated on Facebook that they need at least 100 people come to every show of theirs until January. It only cost $5 to see their show; so it’s cheaper than going to the movies and much more worth it.

If you want to learn how to do improv then come to USU Improv club. Matt Allred, Antic member and club president, teaches techniques of improv comedy every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the FAV building room 150.

Every Saturday night they have another improv comedy group called Logan Out Loud. They start at 9 p.m. and cost only $6. I will warn you though, they are a bit more irreverent. Each member is different in style of acting and improvising but the combination of them all makes the show epic.

Logan Arthouse and Cinema also presents a hysterical comedic hypnotist named Abracadan. Dan is a real therapist who uses hypnotism for fun. He teaches that about the myths of hypnotism, like how hypnotism is not a way to control someone. Hypnotism is like dreaming and afterwards you feel well rested. I’ve only been to one show but it is one heck of an experience to see, and you don’t have to participate to be entertained. Just observing those being hypnotized is entertaining enough. The show is also only $5 in advance and $6 at the door. His show is at 7 p.m. Saturday Oct. 8.

Now it’s food time!

It continues to get colder and will stay cold until the month of May. I decided to share a simple secret to great hot chocolate. I love the winter season because it brings on snuggling, hot chocolate, chocolate oranges and heartwarming movies. So why not combine all these great things?

Ingredients are simple: Hot water (for the best results put water on the stove until you see steam then it will be perfect…not too hot but soothing to the soul), orange juice, hot chocolate mix (whatever kind you like, I’m partial to Swiss Miss with marshmallows ).

Put the hot chocolate mix in the cup as much you plan to use. Then pour in orange juice to a quarter or half of the cup, and finish by adding the hot water. Stir, drink and enjoy.

If you want to use this idea with a loved one I suggest a movie or funny show to keep the mood for snuggling. In my opinion “Better off Dead” is one of the greatest movies ever. It is comedy gold, with a romantic ending. As for my favorite comedy, I would suggest “The IT Crowd.” It is a British comedy about nerds.

Until next time enjoy life, laugh a little more and share memories with loved ones and strangers.
