LETTER: Why some servers don’t deserve tip

To the editor:

A recent article blasted your readers for not tipping well enough in our local restaurants. I would like to share why it is that I feel no guilt when I “stiff” my server.

Utah Administration Code R610-1-4-B: “An employer has a cash wage obligation of at least $2.13 per hour in meeting the required minimum wage. If an employee’s tips combined with the employer’s cash wage obligation of $2.13 per hour do not equal the minimum hourly wage requirement, the employer must increase its cash wage obligation to make up the difference.”

I don’t tip because I know that the server should be making at least minimum wage regardless of my actions. Frankly, I’d like the restaurant owner to pay his own over head — often the food is already more expensive than it should be. Perhaps, the reason that so many of our servers are allegedly “stiffed” is because they are unwilling to exert pressure on their employers to fulfill their lawful responsibilities —   $7.25 an hour is more than fair compensation for taking my order and bringing me a glass of water.
