Beaver Mountain doubtful for early season open

Despite the early opening of Brighton, Beaver Mountain Ski Resort will not likely follow suit.

Beaver Mountain Owner Ted Seeholzer said the resort will probably open after Thanksgiving.

“Unless we’re drenched with snow the opening date won’t change,” Seeholzer said.

He said the lifts are ready and there are 36-38 inches of snow on the mid-mountain area while there are 14-16 inches at the bottom.

Right now the snow is being packed so there will be a good base throughout the season, Seeholzer said.

While the resort is finishing up its seasonal preparations, students have a few options to prepare themselves for the ski and snowboard season.

Students still have a few days to purchase discounted season passes to the resort. Tuesday, Nov. 9 is the last day to get a discounted season pass. A student ID and a class schedule are required to receive the discount.

A ski swap at the Stan Laub Training Center will also be available to students this weekend. The swap runs Thursday, from 7-9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Beaver Mountain Rental Shop is being remodeled and should be ready to open next week Seeholzer said.

Night skiing is something that has also been discussed, Seeholzer said. But, he said, he doesn’t have an answer as to whether or not they will make that option available this season.

Seeholzer said in the next week, the resort’s snow and weather information will be posted on their Web site at www.skithebeav.com.

Seeholzer said Beaver Mountain doesn’t open earlier in the year like Brighton does because it costs $7,000 a day to run the resort. With the smaller population of Cache Valley it’s tough to cover expenses early in the season, he said.

“The resort doesn’t do well at the start or end of the season,” Seeholzer said.
