Fire hits student apartments; cause investigated
Residents of Mountain View Apartments were forced out of their units by a fire Friday night. The apartment complex, located at 640 E 900 North in Logan, caught fire around 10 pm after an electrical malfunction in one of the bathrooms’ ventilation systems, Logan City Fire Marshall Craig Humphreys said.
Traffic around the area was closed off for several hours while fire crews from multiple departments around the valley worked to extinguish the burn. Mountain View residents were allowed to return to their apartments the following day, Humphreys said, with the exception of two apartment units that were excessively damaged
Jon Thompson, whose apartment was adjacent to the initial fire, said that the fire spread through the roof above the units.
“The fire was mainly in the attic so it spread to our room,” Thompson said.
Besides structural damage, Thompson said his and his roommates belongings were mostly untouched. Thompson and his three roommates, along with four other men, were provided housing by the Mountain View managers and will return to their apartments after repairs are made.
Humphreys said that the nature of the fire, requiring water lines to be run up four levels and ladders to reach the roof, necessitated additional manpower and fire departments from Logan, Smithfield, North Logan, Hyrum and Wellsville were called on for support.
