USU’s Karren Finishes 16th In Semifinals At NCAA Track And Field Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Utah State track and field senior Nick Karren finished 16th in the semifinals of the 400 meter hurdles Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., hosted by the University of Oregon.

Karren ended with a time of 51.36, finishing sixth in the third and final heat, placing 16th overall as the top two from each heat as well as the next two fastest times advanced to Friday’s final. Karren was in lane one and was thrown off stride at the first hurdle, as Aaron Younger of Rutgers in lane two tripped and fell.

“Nick ran well; he just would’ve had to run a PR (personal-record) today to advance,” veteran USU head coach Gregg Gensel said. “I’m really proud of him; he’s had a great career at Utah State. Today, he just got beat by better people.”

The senior’s 16th-place finish matches the top place of his career, as he was a three-time NCAA Championships participant, also placing 19th in 2009.

Karren, the Western Athletic Conference champion in the 400m hurdles, ends his USU career with the No. 4 spot on USU’s Top 10 400m hurdles list, with a 50.35, which he ran in winning the WAC title last month.

Utah State’s second NCAA Championships qualifier, junior Clint Silcock, will be in action in the high jump finals on Friday, June 11, starting at 4:30 p.m. (MT).
