LETTER: USU needs more diversity
To the editor:
Last Friday, I attended the Korean Culture Festival put on by the USU Korean Club. The event began with an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet consisting of rice, sushi and other traditional Korean food. Dinner was followed by spectacular demonstrations of traditional Korean singing, music and dancing. The issue I’m concerned with, is that there is not enough cultural diversity being presented to the students at Utah State.
It is important that college students are exposed to different cultures in order to become more accepting of others, and well-rounded. The United States is a melting pot composed of hundreds of different cultures and demographics. Because Utah is less diverse than other parts of the country, natives do not have as great of an opportunity to experience, and thus gain respect for exotic cultures. It is the responsibly of the universities to integrate cultural awareness into their daily business and the lives of their students.
Currently, there are several multicultural clubs and organizations students can join, but enrollment seems unicultural and small in numbers. Personally, becoming involved in a multicultural club is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Utah State should promote and host more culturally diverse events and bring diversity to the students. College is not just about grades, but is about the experience.
