Super Bowl Picks
Patriots will win against the Chargers. I just think the Patriots are better in pretty much every aspect of the game, with the exception of the running game. The National Football Conference is a little trickier to pick, but I think the Packers will continue their dream season and advance to the Super Bowl. The Giants are playing well, but because of the fact that the game is at Lambeau Field in January, the edge has to go to Brett Favre and the Packers.
Pac-Man Jones in the news again
OK, this guy is not getting the hint. After being suspended for an entire season, you would think he would shape up a little bit. After being suspended, Jones told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell he would stay out of clubs to avoid putting himself into a situation where he might be ‘compromised.’ Well, good job of doing that. So what does the league do now? Nothing, suspend him some more or simply just say goodbye and ban him from the league. I say the league does nothing, all another suspension will do is give more time to get in trouble.
Sportsmanship in the WAC
Finally, at last, the chant is finally over. Maybe now students can come up with something new and creative, or at least that is what the Western Athletic Conference is hoping will happen now that it has essentially banned the ‘You Suck’ chant that has been heard at Aggie games for the past couple of years. I have been thinking about the issue of sportsmanship a lot lately, and I think this is just what sports needs. Sometimes as fans we spend so much time dissing and ragging on the other team that we forget to cheer on our own team. If fans take the energy and effort they use putting down the opposing team and channel that toward their own team, I think that effect on the game will be bigger.
Strong man vs. Gladiator
These last few weeks have been heaven. With “American Gladiator” making a comeback and having ESPN show the world’s strongest man competition, TV watching has really heated up. But who would win a fight between a gladiator and a strong man? Speed and agility would go the side of the gladiator, but I think endurance and pure strength would be dominated by the strong man. The strong man would win the fight for sure. The strong man could simply just pick up the gladiator and throw him over a 10-foot bar or pick him up and place him on a high beam.
$100 million hockey contract
Does anyone even care about hockey? This guy, Alexander Ovechkin, signs the biggest contract in NHL history and no one even knows about it. I guess this guy is a pretty good player, but maybe the Washington Capitals would be better off putting their money toward a TV deal so people could actually watch hockey if they wanted to. For that fact, even if you didn’t want to watch it, hockey could at least be on a channel that might be on a regular viewers’ surfing channels, for example ESPN – every sports fan flips through ESPN, but, in reality, do you ever flip through to the Versus network?
Rant
Since we are in the middle of a primary elections, I thought it would be appropriate to conduct my own election. Rather than take a look at critical issues or policy, my election is based strictly on the success of a candidate’s state’s professional sports teams, mainly basketball, football and baseball. For sake of space, I will briefly look at only four candidates. McCain is from Arizona, the Diamondbacks and Suns got him votes, the Cardinals did not. Romney from Massachusetts got three votes for the Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox. Obama, representing Illinois, got no votes for the White Sox, Bulls or Bears (sorry Cubs). Clinton from New York gets a vote for the Giants and that’s it. So the final tally is Romney-3, McCain-2, Clinton-1, Obama-0. Romney wins.
