Aggies hold on for road win against Weber State

The Utah State men’s basketball team started hot and then held on for a 77-71 win over in-state rival Weber State on Tuesday at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

“It’s only five games in, but he was awfully good tonight,” USU head coach Stew Morrill said. Spencer Butterfield had a great second half, and Preston is Preston. He always does things for us. We’ll take it, it’s a good road win.”

The Aggies started 7-of-8 from the field and jumped out to a 14-5 lead but the Wildcats refused to quit in front of their home fans. Weber State closed the half with a big run to lead by one at the intermission.

“We kind of got knocked on our keisters in the first half,” Morrill said. “We started out really well and then they just really got going and we couldn’t keep them contained. Usually both teams don’t play this good of offense because we know each other’s systems pretty well.”

USU had four players reach double figures in scoring as the Aggies fought back in the second half to retake the lead and then close it out down the stretch.

Utah State improved to 5-0 with the win, dropping the Wildcats to 0-3. The Aggies face BYU on Saturday at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City.
