COLUMN: Aggie sports had a rough week

Attendance: Attendance was poor for Saturday’s football game against No. 14 Utah – only 24,750.

Brooke: Brooke Lambert racked up two trys and three conversion kicks during Saturdays Rugby match against UVSC. USU won 46-0.

Chaet: Kicker Ben Chaet was seen kicking a 63-yard field goal during the pre-game warm-ups. The Aggies crossed the 50-yard line six times during the game. Ben could have put 18 points on the board if he kicked each time they got inside the 50.

Dennehy: Head football coach Mick Dennehy now has a record of 16-31 in five seasons at Utah State.

Erin: Former USU volleyball player Erin Cartwright-Davis was named the NCAA Woman Athlete of the year for the state of Utah. Cartwright-Davis is the first recipient of the award for Utah State in 14 years.

Fuller: Head coach Burt Fuller kept the volleyball team in the locker room for more than 30 minutes after Thursday and Saturday’s volleyball matches.

Golf: Golfers were lead by Brett Black during the Air Force Tournament in Colorado. He finished fourth in the tournament and the USU team finished 10th.

Hockey: Hockey beat BYU in the last 22 seconds of its game on Thursday with a goal from freshman player William Winsa.

Intramural: Intramural play got under way last week with a Solid White Tuna win over the White Guys in flag football.

Jackson: Redshirt freshman Leon Jackson threw for 52 yards, completing five-of-seven passes during Saturday’s game with Utah. Not only is Jackson the quarterback of the future for the Ags, he should be the quarterback of now as well.

Keystone: The Tribal West lacrosse team brought two 30-packs of Keystone beer for halftime during Saturday’s round robin tourney.

Lightning: Lightning was cause for the cancellation of the USU Women’s soccer game on Sunday in Sacramento, Calif.

Meyer: Urban Meyer and the Utes stomped on the Aggies scoring 41 points in the first half of play during Saturday’s game.

Nelson: Basketball player Spencer Nelson was named the Multiple Sclerosis player of the year for the state of Utah.

Our: “Our running game was actually all right tonight,” USU Quarterback Travis Cox said after the game. USU had 48 yards rushing on 35 attempts averaging 1.14 yards per carry while the U had 237 on 43 attempts averaging 5.5 per carry.

Penalty: Penalty minutes during Thursday’s hockey game against BYU totaled 90 minutes between the two teams breaking down to 46 for USU and 44 for BYU. Hockey is broken down into three 20-minute periods.

Quarterbacks: Six quarterbacks saw action Saturday night.

Rugby: Sometimes, when it’s late at night and I can’t sleep, I try to conjure up a game more complex than rugby. I have been unsuccessful to date.

Scoreboard: The scoreboard was out of commission Saturday leaving USU Athletics Media Relations Director Mike Strauss the official time keeper until the second quarter when the scoreboard started working.

Two-hands: Utah’s 48-6 victory over the Ags allowed way too many opportunities for Ute fans to give each other two-handed, over-the-head high fives – way too many.

UNLV: UNLV will play USU Football for the first time since 1995 when Abu Wilson rushed for a career-high of 251 yards and three touchdowns. Utah State won 42-0 at UNLV on Nov. 11, 1995.

Volleyball: Volleyball lost to Pacific during its five-game match on Saturday, It was it’s third-straight loss.

Washington: Washington Red Skin Chris Cooley caught a 2-yard pass from Mark Brunell, the first of his NFL career.

Xavier: Professor Charles Xavier of the X-men has absolutely nothing to do with Aggie athletics, but his psionic and telepathic abilities would be extremely handy in betting on sports. No mutant powers were needed, however, to predict the outcome of the Ags’ match up with No. 14 Utah.

Yard: After driving to their own 1-yard line, the Ags were called for a false start penalty and their offensive threat was thwarted.

Zuzana: Zuzana Cernianska recorded 14 kills and 15 digs against Pacific on Saturday. Despite Cernianska’s efforts the team still lost its match against the Tigers.
