OUR VIEW: Forget football, take pride in other sports
Don’t tell Nick Thiros that Utah State lost the big game Saturday night.
The senior forward for the USU hockey team scored three goals Saturday to help his team win the big game against the BYU Ice Cats, 7-5.
And don’t tell the volleyball and soccer teams that the Aggies choked over the weekend, either.
Zuzana Cernianska and the volleyball team put it all on the line and came up with a big conference win over Cal Poly Saturday. And, soccer player Nicole Gooch came off the bench and found the back of the net three times over the weekend to push her squad to victory in a big game over the University of Idaho, as well.
Just because the football team continues to put on woeful showings, doesn’t mean it’s time to start thinking about basketball season. There are still plenty of teams playing, and playing well, underneath the Aggie banner.
While Romney Stadium is by far the largest athletics venue at the university, it doesn’t necessarily host the most important team. Think quality over quantity.
Every athlete who sports Aggie Blue and the USU logo on their uniform – from Frisbee to football, from rugby to rodeo – takes a great deal of pride in the university and in their sport.
Don’t overlook these hardworking athletes just because they display their talents on a smaller stage. Utah State athletics are thriving and winning games, night in and night out.
Light up the ‘A’ and show some pride.
