City Council discusses USU issues

The Logan City Council met Wednesday to discuss issues that affect Utah State University.

The resolution to support the siting of a fire substation on campus was tabled until further discussion and a public hearing can be held.

In coordination with USU, the City of Logan is negotiating construction of a station that is proposed to be built on the northeast side of campus, near the Trailer Court.

After holding a previous public hearing with students and addressing their concerns, council members said they would still like to give Logan residents an opportunity to ask questions and comment, so they decided to table the issue until the their next meeting.

“I will not take action without a public hearing,” said Councilwoman Karen Borg.

The council approved a resolution that acknowledges an agreement between the city and USU for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The agreement provided Logan easement across university property for the trail. The two-mile segment, located east of the Logan Golf and Country Club, is pivotal in the eventual linking of Logan Canyon to Green Canyon in North Logan.

In other business, the council accepted a resolution to adjust the city boundaries between Logan and North Logan and denied the request to rezone a presently agricultural zone on 1600 West Young Ward Road to a single-family residential area.

A public hearing was held, where several citizens expressed their concern on the issue of bringing a new neighborhood into a presently rural, agricultural area. After listening to the public opinion, Borg and Councilwoman Tami Pyfer agreed that the best use of that land would be to leave it as agricultural. The rezone request was denied.

The Logan City Council will hold its next meeting Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6:15 p.m.
