Health and Wellness Center offers myriad services

The Student Health Center, previously on the first floor of the Taggart Student Center, and the Wellness Center, on the lower floor of the University Inn, have come together and moved locations.

What is now called the Student Health and Wellness Center is located at 850 E. 1200 North, just north of Romney Stadium. It is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This facility is available to all Utah State University students. Each student pays a student health fee of $26.50 as part of tuition.

Jim Davis, director of the Student Health and Wellness Center, said the previous health center was too small and not private enough. The new building is able to house all of the services available and offers privacy.

Davis expressed his obligation to provide health-related services for students. He said his biggest dilemma is making students aware of the fine facility available to them.

The Health Center portion of the building focuses on the medical aspect of health. It provides standard check-up rooms, a pharmacy, an X-ray machine, a minor surgery room, a lab testing area, a physical therapy room, a nurses’ station, a women’s area and a waiting room.

The Wellness Center portion of the building focuses on prevention of health-related problems. Though connected to the Health Center, the Wellness Center has its own entrance to ensure privacy for each student. It has a dietitian counselor, a conference room for large group meetings and a research area for different health-related topics.

Any student can take advantage of this facility. The student tuition fees cover the doctor fees. Students only pay for additional care, such as prescription drugs or anesthetics to perform minor surgeries.

“You get some pretty good bargains,” Davis said. “It’s less than most co-payments.”

The No. 1 concern students have is if they need student health insurance to be qualified to go to the Student Health and Wellness Center. The only requirement is to be a student at Utah State University. A proposal has been made to extend health services to spouses and children of students at Utah State University.
