Humans of USU discuss Labor day history, customs, trends
Labor Day marks the end of summer and the beginning of the new school year, and provides Aggies with one last long summer-esque weekend.
A few students answered questions about their thoughts on Labor Day — Kendra Adamson, a sophomore studying business communications; Spencer Sargent, an undeclared sophomore; Travis Hotchkiss, a junior studying mechanical engineering; Braden Hess, a sophomore studying business; Jessie Wengert, a senior studying health education and biology secondary education; Emi Facer, a sophomore studying health education and promotion; and Dallin Johnson, a junior studying economics.
The Utah Statesman: What is the history of Labor Day?
KA: Is it embarrassing that I don’t know? I guess a day to rest from our labors. Maybe it has something to do with military? I should know!
TH: Well, the people who labored wanted a day off, so they asked for it and they called it Labor Day. That’s my best guess.
JW: Well I’m no historian, but as far as I know, it is the first Monday in September and it focuses on the social and economical achievements of the United States.
BH: People were tired of laboring so they made a day they wished they didn’t have to.
DJ: When I was little I thought Labor Day was a day where we celebrated when women went into labor.
US: What are you doing for Labor Day?
DJ: I’ll probably drive down to Davis county. No real big plans besides eating fried chicken and preparing for Comic Con later this month.
KA: Every year my family and I go to Burger Bar and we get burgers, shakes and all those goods. Then we go eat it at a park and play kickball, volleyball and other fun games.
TH: I’m going to Bear Lake with a long lost friend. I hope he’s not lost by the time we get there.
SS: No school. Probably I’ll have a barbecue with my family and maybe float the Weber River.
JW: Besides catching up on homework, maybe I will be going fourwheeling up in the canyon or near Bear Lake.
US: Do you wear white after Labor Day? Why or why not?
KA: I personally choose not to wear white pants after Labor Day, but I don’t judge others if they do!
SS: I have never done it before. I didn’t know if we were supposed to. Maybe I have by coincidence, but never on purpose would I wear white.
BH: Of course! White is my favorite color. The rule of “no white after Labor Day” is stupid.
JW: I believe you would wear white after Labor Day, but honestly I have no idea why.
EF: Of course. Because if I didn’t wear white after Labor Day, I would never wear white. Every day is after Labor Day if you think about it.
DJ: Absolutely! Because I didn’t even know that as a thing until now.
