Relax! How to enjoy the engagement period

The engagement period is a beautiful time. It’s a time to get to know your fiancé better and a time to plan the wedding and reception together. A lot of changes are on the way. You are moving from single to married status. The transition should feel different, but not terrible. Don’t let the pressures of the wedding plans and the unknowns of married life make it a miserable, high-stress time. Follow these tips to relax and enjoy being engaged.

Get a Wedding Planner

The single biggest mistake a woman can make is thinking she can plan her wedding all by herself. You could try it, but you will turn into Bridezilla. I promise you’ll be so unpleasant, the only guests at your wedding will be your mom and dad. There are so many details involved in planning a successful wedding… you will need lots of help. Enjoy the process by getting a wedding planner. Find someone you trust. You can either hire a professional planner or ask a close relative or friend to do the job. Whatever you choose, select someone you can talk to. They will be the one that listens to everything you say and then makes sure it actually gets done.

Plan early, check often

Meet with your wedding planner and go over all of the big details. Everything. The location, decorations, food, music, guest list, invites, pictures, videos, helpers, even parking. Tell them what you want and how you want it to look, feel, smell, taste and cost. Get a calendar and start breaking the tasks into smaller chunks. Map out the steps on a calendar and stay on track. Effective planning ensures details get attended to on time instead of a million last-minute jobs piling up the week before the wedding.

Ask for advice

You will encounter a lot of firsts as a new couple. Some of those happen during the engagement period. New phone plan, insurance policy, first home together, shared bank accounts — scary! Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from those that you love and trust. Talk to your parents and family members that are married. They went through the same experience. They will understand and probably be able to give very valuable advice. The worst mistake you could make as an engaged couple is think that you are the first in the world to encounter road bumps. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

Remember the big picture

The single biggest thing to remember is the actual reason you are engaged. You found the one person in this world who loves and understands you and actually wants to spend their life with you. You love and understand them, despite their smelly feet. Together you will tackle the ups and downs of life. The wedding and the reception are fun, but keep it all in perspective. Your relationship with your true love is more important than the color of the napkins. Don’t stress the small stuff. Spend time nurturing your relationship during the engagement period. Enjoy being in love.
